My "Mama" Thing

I'm not sure when I first thought about what I wanted to be like as a mom. Somewhere along the way, I decided I wanted my kids to always remember me singing to them. I don't have a particularly great voice but that doesn't really matter to your babies.

When I was pregnant with my little M&M, I would sing to him throughout the day. The one song I would always sing was "You are My Sunshine." He seemed to recognize and be comforted by the tune before he was born. After he arrived, I continued to sing it for him. It used to be the one song that would always calm him down.

Around the time we started working on putting him down sleepy but awake, he would cry every time I sang that song. He knew it meant he had to go to sleep. I tried tons of other songs but he never seemed to be comforted the same way "You are My Sunshine" always did.

After Halloween, I really started in with the Christmas music. I could listen to it year round! I would sing the songs all day and Christmas Pandora was on constantly. He seemed to settle down when he was upset and I sang any Christmas song. He truly is my child!

Now, a month after Christmas, he still prefers Christmas songs to anything else I could sing. Every night before I lay him down to sleep, I sing him a song to settle him. As soon as I start "Winter Wonderland" or "Silent Night," he lays his head down on my shoulder and closes his eyes. Lately he even hums every now and then. I like to think that he's singing along! It puts a smile on my face every time. Some day he will be too big to snuggle in my arms while I make laps around his bedroom singing. I'll always cherish those memories.
